fire in the sky
short \||\ pg /||/ unbetaed
very much inspired by divvy's stunning a violent yet flammable world
based off the picture prompts from march 17 07 and march 06 07

spencer is the first one to call it the end of the world.

the fire's been burning steadily across the world for months now, ever since the last ocean finished drying up. back when the television still worked, the band would gather together on and around the couch to watch the grave-looking newscaster report loss after loss, scorching death after scorching death. no one says it, but having no power is almost a relief; nowadays, ignorance is bliss.

no one knows for sure anymore, but jon thinks it's the middle of october. it seems fitting that the end of the world would come in autumn.

after the sun fades out behind the giant cloud of smoke that engulfs the world, and all the humidity's sapped by the global fires, everyone knows that it's only a matter of time before it's all over. the gas stations are long gone, and running won't keep them alive for long because there's nowhere to run to. when brendon spots flames on the horizon, they start giving up. the food rations increase, and everyone sits awake on the balcony long into the night, watching the fires move closer. nobody talks much anymore; since the air got dry, everyone's voices are so raspy it hurts to speak. brendon's throat in particular feels stuck, like he's trying to cry but can't.

one morning, they wake up to the wall of flames less than a mile from the house. spencer never suspected that the end of the world would be so quiet. ryan moves slowly around the house all morning, cleaning and crying silently, his tears evaporating almost instantly in the hot, dry air. brendon sits numbly on the front steps, staring at the sky.

my midday, soencer decides it's no use dying like this. he figures they've only got a few hours left, so why not live life to its fullest while they can? with the last of the stored water, he fills the tub halfway and the band spends the afternoon splashing water all over the place and laughing for the first time in weeks. no one points out that the laughter is interspersed with tears.

as night begins to fall, the fire's only a few hundred yards from the house. brendon decides that before he dies, he wants to sing one last time, even if his voice is ruined. he brings everyone into the living room and clears his parched throat,

'if all our life is but a dream,
fantastic posing greed,
then we should feed our jewelery to the sea,
for diamonds do appear to be,
just like broken glass to me.'

then his voice gives out completely, and the only thing that's left of anyone is their too dry eyes that struggle to cry but can't.

as the smoke gets thicker, brendon swears he sees sunlight out of the window. as the world ends, they open their hearts together.

A/N: as i mentioned earlier, very much inspired by divvy's a violent yet flammable world, which is quite possibly my favorite story of all time. by the way, the song i listened to while writing this was 'grapevine fires' by death cab for cutie. it's an amazing song. cut text from 'sophmore slump or comeback of the year' by fall out boy. thanks for reading! comments are ♥!
