Brendon's been writing, Ryan knows. He sees him sometimes, curled up in corners, on windowsills. Clutching a black and white composition book like the ones Ryan himself used to clutch.
Ryan finds one of the notebooks in Brendon's suitcase. (He doesn't know why he was looking, he shouldn't have been looking, he had to look.)
It must be a new notebook, because it's almost completely empty except for the very first page. Scribbled in Brendon's simple handwriting on the top line is one day we're gonna fall apart.
-----
Jon tries hard, so hard to help. He wears himself out, spreads himself too thin and half loses his mind in the process.
You can't fix everything, Spencer says to Jon one night on Jon's back porch and Jon says I can try and Spencer feels one hot tear slide down his cheek and Jon licks it off and it's all okay, for one little, tiny moment.
-----
Too many nights, Ryan comes home stumbling, pupils huge and deep and sad. Spencer puts up with it for a while, but one night Ryan comes in with a bruise growing on his neck, just below his ear. Spencer shoves him down onto the closest couch. Ryan stares blankly up at the ceiling.
Spencer puts his fist through the wall over Ryan's head, packs his things and leaves.
The next day, he has bruises on his knuckles.
-----
One day at the practice space, Brendon stretches and his shirt lifts and Jon sees bruises on his hipbones. Jon feels nauseous, feels choked and it must show because Brendon asks Okay? and Jon has to force an ugly smile.
-----
In the end, it's Jon that makes them finally unravel. He comes to the practice space with black bags under his eyes like bruises, after too many sleepless nights spent smoking and drinking coffee and Ryan throws his guitar at the wall and stalks out of the room before anyone can see him cry.
And they fall apart.
