He won't be the 'real' president until January. George W. is still our president. Obama is our President-elect. That may be why. I don't know what Remembrance Day is, though.
Remembrance day is when we remember all the soldiers who died in world war I and wear poppies. It's actually supposed to be the 11th because that's the day world war I ended but we usually celebrate on the nearest Sunday.
We call it Veterans Day in the US (which is why Brandy didn't recognize the name) and it is a federal holiday - but on November 11. Mostly we don't get mail that day and in some states they have the day off of school.
I don't mean to sound/be egotistical.I'm very "long winded" when I try to explain something.
Did you know about the little UK "Bevin Boys" that were set to work in the pits(coal mines).Digging in tunnels about 14inches high and approx 9/10 inches wide. This meant they'd be laying on their sides to dig, poor little mites some were 8/9/10 years but it was that or the battle fields. (ridiculous and horrific)I was touched when I saw a small white helmeted brigade in there honour today.
I really love to learn and take great interest in other countries folk lore and customs. I've learnt something from you tonight that I didn't know.
I'm really interested in WW1 - I have a couple of CD lectures series about it and a DVD series, in addition to bunches of books. I'll have to look up "Bevin Boys".
My one grandfather was in the American Army during WW1, but I don't think he ever made it over to Europe before the war ended. My mom's parents were both kids in Germany at that time ( they both came to the US during the 1920s).
I was also suprised that I didn't see Obama laying a wreath. I was really looking forward to see him doing that for the first time for his country..(Presidency)
Funny you should say that. He in fact did lay a wreath on Veteran's Day (Tuesday, which is when we celebrate it over here):

It really is. I love how you see so many people wearing their poppies and showing their support.
