i finished my book, cos the last 2 chapters were a real bore, so i moved on this morning to listening to the Black Kids EP and the Burial album ( Read more... )

The Portishead comparison was more about how Burial's got a sound and really stuck to it and the critics have responded to that. Though there's also similarities in how he uses vocals I think - that P'head one that uses Johnnie Ray ("Biscuit"?)

I thought of Boards of Canada too. I think the difference is that Burial doesn't really do 'sinister undercurrent' anywhere near as well as BoC. Although there's not much evidence that he's trying on this album.

Surely best comparison = Spring Heel Jack - Life In the Freezer....? Will have to remind myself what that sounds like..
