Road trip!
WEDNESDAY (approximation):
Adeel: You know... you're not going to be here next semester. And Christmas is coming soon... so if we wanted to do something over a weekend...
Emily: Want to go on a road trip?
Adeel: I didn't say it.
We decided to leave at 5:00 Friday morning.
FRIDAY, A BIT BEFORE 5 AM:
I got lost. I called Adeel. I found him and we went to Timmy Ho's. They didn't have bagels, so I pouted and drank four cups of coffee out of a travel mug.
7:00 AM
We crossed the border. The US border police are evil. I sang a lot of Kenny Chesney.
7:15 ish AM
We went to Lockport Gambino Ford. The guy from the commercial wasn't there, but we took a picture.
7:43/7:52 AM
We went to Denny's for breakfast. We had eggs. We talked about how my siblings would be just waking up, and disputed the differences in time between my phone and Adeel's watch. Adeel called his Dad.
8:00 AM
We realized we didn't know where we were going. We stopped in Darien at a high school and sat sketchily in the parking lot.
8:15 AM
We are bound for Pennsylvania.
9:00 AM
We realize that most of our friends are not awake yet. We also find a dilapidated house and take a lot of pictures.
10:00 AM
We stop for awhile so Adeel can take a picture of a sign. I take pictures of the inside of the car, my coffee cup, and the rain through the window.
11:00 AM
We're driving along a lot of NYS back roads. Everything we see is gorgeous. We end up pulling over a lot to take pictures. I also do a lot of slowing down so Adeel can take pictures, pissing off the cars behind me. This is the only part of the trip where we let cars pass us.
11:30 AM
It's snowing, but I think that's just because of how high in the mountains we were. We pull off the road next to a trailer to take more pictures.
a bit before 12:00 PM
We arrive in Pennsylvania. We think it's awesome and pull off so we can take lots of pictures of signs. No one else on the road thinks it's cool.
12:30 PM
The roads in Pennsylvania are very hilly, and the towns are few and far between. Most of the towns are a gas station. Adeel starts to feel sick, probably because I'm taking the turns at 60 miles per hour. We take more pictures.
1:00 PM
We finally arrive in a town that has more than a gas station. It's a ghost town. There are no people. We finally find the "business district," which is basically a pizza place and an ice cream store. Adeel eats a massive ice cream cone, and then we continue on our way.
3:00 PM
We see an Amish boy walking down the street. He looks about three years old. We are approaching Lancaster and very happy. Espcially me, because I have now been driving for 10 hours.
4:00 PM
Nothing happens. Nothing.
7:00 PM
We arrive in Lancaster. Somehow, we find the downtown historical district. The tourist office is closed, but we find a map that has a hotel on it, so we go there and check in.
8:00 PM
We go to a Korean restaurant. Adeel orders Bulgogi and I order Kimchi stew. It's actually quite good, although I don't know why there is a Korean restaurant in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I comment on how I feel drunk. I have been driving for about 14 hours. We decide to go back to the hotel because Adeel wants to watch Fox news.
9:00 PM
Adeel watches the news. I contemplate changing into pajamas/ taking out my contacts/ charging my cell phone. I konk out instead.
11:00 PM
I wake up and take out my contacts and turn off the light. I go back to bed.
SATURDAY, 7:00 AM
The first alarm goes off. It's Adeel's. I try to yell at him, but I think all I manage is growling.
8:00 AM
We get dressed and check out of the hotel, heading towards Lancaster County.
9:00 AM
We eat breakfast at a cute, family diner in Lancaster. There are Mennonites outside. Adeel and I discuss the difference, and I try my hardest to remember the 20-page research paper I wrote on the Amish in the 6th grade. It is a lot easier after I milk the "unlimited coffee refills" for all its worth. I also inhale two very large blueberry pancakes and an embarassing amount of syrup.
10:00 AM
We drive through a lot of towns in Lancaster. We realize that the towsnfolk of Intercourse, Pennsylvania are milking their town name for all its worth. We decide we prefer the Hamlet at Bird-in-Hand better.
10:30 AM
Adeel finds an amazing hat. He doesn't buy it, then regrets it, and we spend much of the morning trying to find it in a different store.
I also grow tired of listening to his stories of Aristotle, so he finds a new conversation partner. We discuss the difference between Arabian and Shetland horses, and Adeel asks me what I would name a horse. I decide on Clarence.
11:00 AM
I decide to call my mother. She thinks that it's hilarious that we are in Pennsylvania, and asks for some peanut brittle. We drive further along the road, and we realize that we have passed most of the locales where we might locate said peanut brittle. We go back to Bird-in-Hand, and we return to the farmer's market. I take a picture of some freaky cauliflower and buy the peanut brittle, and Adeel buys his hat, and he mails a postcard to Madison.
12:00 PM
We head towards Lancaster, and the interstate. Adeel and I both have movies to make, and we have discovered that if there is absolutely no traffic, we will make it to the city at 9:30, when the movie starts. I immediately get in the left lane and cruise between 80 and 90 mph the whole way.
I ask Adeel to give me points to aim for. We almost blast through Milton before I reaize I was supposed to switch highways.
3:00 PM
We go to Arby's and stay half an hour. I go for awhile at 100mph to make up for lost time.
4:44 PM
We cross the border into New York.
6:00 PM
We get gas in Avon, 20 miles away from Rochester. I call Sharjil to let him know I'll be late for the movie. A girl who is filling up her car admires my Aldo boots.
7:01 PM
We arrive in Buffalo.
7:40 PM
I throw a hissy fit and nearly refuse to drive. I have lost my ability to read road signs, but I am still driving at 90 mph. A car behind me flashes his brights at me, and we wonder if he is in a gang.
7:50 PM
5 minutes later than we had anticipated, we cross the border. I love the Canadian border police. They are very very nice.
8:06 PM
We are in St. Catherine's. Adeel thinks the signs that say how far Toronto is are wrong.
8:13 PM
We are in Hamilton. I am driving very very fast. I have nearly gone insane at this point, but at least my energy level is up. I feel quasi-drunk and am carrying on conversations with the cars ahead of me. At one point, a car with a "Gator's" license plate is driving ahead of me. I miss him when he shifts lanes, but then I pass him.
8:27 PM
Burlington. I become fixated on the number 57.
8:38 PM
Mississauga. I can't feel my foot, but I don't tell Adeel because I don't want to scare him.
8:45 PM
We're in Toronto. Time: 54 minutes. I consider buying myself a trophy and ask if Adeel wouldn't mind introducing me as "The girl who drove from the border in 54 minutes" with a fanfare. I also consider putting an ad on Craigslist for people who need to be driven to the border in 54 minutes.
8:55 PM
We get off the Gardiner onto Spadina.
9:15 PM
I leave Adeel, park the car, and meet Sharjil for the Godfather.
