The bit you quoted about the Middle East does seem off-key. Does the author not realise that angels exist in religions other than Christianity? Are they equating evil with Islam?
That makes me shudder. I have a Born Again Christian relation who seriously does believe this. It is an area we just can't venture into.
The author does not acknowledge angels (or any other type of religious figure) in other religions. She doesn't acknowledge other religions at all. Nor do I believe she is implying Islam is evil (I reread the passage and surrounding text a few times to make sure of this).
Or at least in context it's very clear the angels are just troubled there is too much strife for them to handle and that's why it's still an war-torn area. The lack of insight here is what bothers me. As you say: it treads dangerous territory, which I honestly don't think the author intended.

Other reviews I've read didn't catch this, though. They are all mostly positive and tended to ignore the religious aspect...
