Please don't vote!

Ok, this will be a quick one. My guidance to most people is to please not vote in any elections. I see the "Rock the Vote" ads and bumper stickers and the advocacy for "Get out there and vote" all the time and I have to tell you, this is a horrible idea. You see, this push to get people out to vote only serves to water down the voting pool by ( Read more... )

Due to our (rather informative) discussion on anti-usa, I decided to check out your journal.

Of course, I'm commenting because this post struck me. Why should you vote if you don't know what's going on politically, or the candidates name's, let alone their beliefs. I also hate people who blatantly don't vote when they have the option and have the nerve to criticize whatever they don't agree with.

Does it ever bother you that people vote for people solely for their political orientation? They'll vote for whoever's liberal or republican without realizing that the candidate can be possibly too extreme.

Actually, I had just turned 18 in time to vote for either Gore or Bush, but was so intimidated with the amount of (mis)information and propaganda that I didn't know what to think/believe. I ended up not being able to decide, and still have my mail-in ballot. I haven't voted since, for the same reasons. The media is so intent on pushing us to vote, and tossing any and all potentially damaging information about the candidates/issues, that I have no idea what to believe or where to find the truth of the matter. I'd like to vote, but refuse to until I actually feel informed.

I said "Don't Vote" because the only type of voter that this would work on is the same kind of voter who would go out and vote just because someone on MTV said they should. In the rest of my post, I did say that if you have an actual opinion and have some awareness of the issues/candidates, then by all means vote. And I agree, it's true that not everyone has access to the best news, or even news that isn't biased, and that should be remedied ( ... )
