Some CD drawers have a little opening about the size of a pin that you can use to manually open them. Or, if it's broken beyond repair, then opening up the case with a screwdriver might do the trick.

Nailing its feet to the perch is probably right out.

Sorry I didn't reply to this before - various things have kept me off the computer recently, except for essential work related stuff.

Couldn't see any way of opening the cd drawer. I did manage to break off the little flap on the front, but couldn't get the cd carriage itself out. However I did manage to retrieve the cd by unscrewing the bottom so that the whole cd drive fell out!

I was just going to offer the same idea - just below the tray is normally a small hole. Open up a paperclip and stick it in. Sometimes you have to push quite hard, but eventually you'll feel something give and the tray should release. You'll have to pull it out manually, though.

As to the vinyl, as far as I can see it's coming back into fashion - quite a lot of those naff catalogues that come in the Radio Times have actual record players.

Sorry for belated reply - see above. It's been a fairly fraught couple of weeks - I'm so glad it's nearly half term!

My mum said the same about record players being advertised in catalogues in RT. Also, I've found that Amazon, Maplin etc. do turntables with a usb connector to plug into a computer, so records can be played through computer speakers or recorded onto hard disk. Will have to see which is cheapest - buying a record player or replacing all my records with cds, assuming I can get them.
