I agree up to a point, but I can see why it's happening. I mean, I have zero interest in football, but even I know that he's been in the job for many years in an industry where it's become more common to measure length of service in months, with managers being sacked after just one or two lost games. So that's kind of interesting in itself - how has he done it? Are the owners of Man Utd more mature than those of other clubs? Is he proof that letting the manager get on with it is a good strategy, and if so, why don't other clubs try it? As I said, I'm not interested in football, but it seems to me there are quite a lot of more generally applicable human / management / teamwork themes going on there ( ... )

Oh, I agree there's room for reflection on all those things. No doubt there'll be some longer articles in the next few days, and after his last match in charge.

But in nearly every news broadcast I've seen today, and on the BBC website, this story has come ahead of the Queen's Speech, which is arguably more important to anyone who isn't a dedicated Man Utd fan. Fergie's retirement isn't going to have a direct impact on most people in the country, but changes in the state pension system will.

Yes, I didn't know that until OH was watching the 10 o'clock BBC News - the Queen's Speech was first, which I totally took for granted, then when they moved on to Ferguson's retirement he remarked that at 6 o'clock it had been put first and someone must have complained.

However many people are, or are not, interested or affected, I simply can't see that it's appropriate for the BBC - of all channels - to put football higher up the billing than the running of the country!
