Tell me about Korea. Why did you go? What did you study? What was it like?

Hmm, well, I went almost at random. I wanted to do a junior year abroad thing, and my university had a relationship with one in Seoul, and it looked interesting, so off I went! I loved it there enough that i went back again after my BA, to do a one-year non-degree postgraduate course ( ... )

When I first got there, the newspapers still had a section devoted to describing people who were arrested for "spreading black rumors" -- by the end of my second visit, they were prosecuting the former military strongman. What an amazing thing to witness!

That sounds incredible! Wow. And scary, eek!

I hope beyond hope that someday North and South are unified...such a heartbreaking experience for a country that did nothing to bring it on themselves.

Partitions are always heartbreaking. Sigh.

Iz and I were looking at an older globe today, trying to figure out when it was made. India and Pakistan were separated, but neither Germany nor Korea. Sad landmarks.

What was your first fannish experience?

My first fannish experience was on the internet in 2001. It was a few months after S5 of LFN finally aired, and for some reason I had a question about the show, and I thought, "Hmmmm, maybe I can find the answer online." So I did a search and stumbled, by accident, on the old AW Page. The site was interesting, but more importantly I found the message board! I had never thought of there being fan communities before, but once I saw that one, I was hooked! I still am associated with the successor site, all these years later. LOL.

"Stumbled" is a good description of my first contacts as well, which seems so odd, considering where it all led to!

Oooh, lots of questions!

1. What is your favorite word?

I don't think I actually have one! I am so dull.

2. What is your least favorite word?

"Feral". This is entirely due to seeing it overused in fan fiction. LOL.

3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Lots of things, I suppose. Witnessing raw, unfiltered creativity of others, people pushing boundaries, people posing difficult questions....

4. What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Easy answers, predictability, smugness

5. What sound or noise do you love?

Drums, traffic

6. What sound or noise do you hate?

Loud gum smacking.

7. What is your favorite curse word?

Shit. Nice, all-purpose word for any and all cursing occasions. ;-)

8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I would like to try teaching (adults, not children).

9. What profession would you not like to do?

Anything involving sales.

5. What sound or noise do you love?

Drums, traffic

Hmm, drumming. I'll have to make you a CD...

What's your favourite tree (I'm not a hippy, honest! *g*) & what does it look like, & why is it awesome?

My favorite tree, without question, is the Redwood. It's an evergreen tree native to the Pacific Coast of North America, and it's known for growing really REALLY tall. 150 years ago, the hills where I live were covered with them; now, only a few groves are left in public parks. But they're stunning -- something about those long, long trunks makes you feel like an insignificant speck of nothingness (in a good way, if that makes any sense).

Oh, I'd love to see a redwood one day! I totally get that insignificant-speck-of-nothingness thing with tall trees, and also how old they are. Thanks for sharing!

What has been your favourite BSG moment so far, and why? Same goes for *least* favourite. :)

My favorite moment in BSG is maybe a strange choice: it's from the episode in the first season when Ellen Tigh first shows up. Everyone is quite suspicious of her miraculous survival and reappearance, and at dinner with Bill Adama, Lee Adama, and Roslin, she finally cuts through all the hints and insinuations that she might be a Cylon by suddenly going "BOO!" at Roslin. I loved the character from that point on.

The least favorite? Probably all of the final episode.
