Things I Do Not Like

Dec 09, 2009 00:12

1. Being stuck on jury duty. For a week. And I didn't even get selected in the end! (I don't think the DA liked me much. Ha!)

2. When it gets down to the 30's in the Bay Area. There is no insulation in any of the buildings here! *Whimpers*

I'm going to go crawl under several blankets now.

Welcome to my world. Whenever I'm in New Delhi, anyway. Central heating is an alien concept in these parts, and it's always down to single digits (celcius, that is) in winter. I am from the tropics (really. the Tropic of Cancer is a few degrees away from my hometown), I cannot be having with this cold!

Yes! It's amazing how just a little bit of cold (compared to what people get in, say, Moscow, LOL) can make you miserable when there is inadequate heating.

Our idea of "cold" here is usually in the 50's Fahrenheit (around the teens, Celsius). And while denizens of truly cold climates may laugh at this, the non-insulated construction that is typical here really does make that range chilly! But the past few days have been in the 40's during the *day* and 30's at night. My little living-room wall heater is having trouble keeping up. I've had to resort to little Bob Cratchit gloves with the fingertips cut off. :-(

I know what you mean. In a couple of days, I'm escaping home, and 'winter' == temperature in the teens (celcius). Ten is a low. Single digits are unthinkable, usually. Whereas up here... Brrr. It's a good thing I won't be spending January in this city, because the temperature varies between ones and twos and sometimes even a zero on campus.

I can't imagine being in such cold weather! It's so hot here all the time. :S

Can you fan some of that heat my way, please? Maybe some of it will cross the Pacific. ;-)

Commiserations on the jury duty -- I've made it onto a jury twice, and while I was glad to serve, I think the voir dire process was much more tedious than the actual trial.

It hasn't gotten above freezing here in several days, and we're in much the same boat as you -- very little insulation in the house. Old World Charm only goes so far...

This one is a murder trial, so they're being quite painstaking about questioning each potential juror. I had a pretty good feeling that I'd eventually be dinged -- and sure enough, once I was called to the jury box the DA couldn't get rid of me fast enough -- but it took them days even to get to me.

I was wondering how a lawyer made it that far in the process. I don't mind being on a jury (though it's really wrenching to hear people's stories) but the selection process is utterly mind-numbing.

Oh, sometimes they don't mind lawyers at all, especially in complex cases. I don't think it was my profession that got me excused, but rather (1) my general politics; and (2) the fact that I recognized one of the names in the witness list as someone who had received a *lot* of very negative press attention (in ways that directly called into question his competence and credibility). But whatever the reason, I'm happy to be finished!

I'm lucky with the whole jury duty thing. I've basically got a life-time excuse not to do it. :D Some sort of crap about me being biased because of family profession, yada yada. I don't really care to be honest...

As for your cold problem... bloody hell! I am never going to complain about my winters again. We occassionally get a few days that are single digit celcius (I have no idea of the conversion) but it never lasts long. At the minute I am currently in shorts and singlets attempting to get cool. lol.

It is pretty good. :D I got a letter re. jury duty and sent it back with the whole family background thing and was fine. My friend on the otherhand has been called up three times. lol. I shouldn't laugh but it is funny.

As for being hot... well the sun has gone down (FINALLY) so it's a bit cooler. I spend a large chunk of my day on my little veranda trying to catch a breeze.
