Caprica - anyone else watching?

I have very *very* mixed feelings about BSG: loved it through about midway through S3; HATED it afterwards, so much so that that hatred somewhat tarnishes my memory of the entire series. So I wasn't sure if I wanted to start watching Caprica. Really, the only thing that tempted me was the prospect of Polly Walker as an evil secret-cult-leading ( Read more... )

I left the states before getting very far into BSG, though I loved what I did see. Once I'm back more permanently I'll start watching them again, even though I'm quite spoiled for the end. (Many of the online watching places are blocked here....like Hulu....) I'm still interested enough in the progress of hte story to give it a go, though I'm sure I'm going to find the end lame. As you know, I *hate* circular stories! lol!

"All of this has happened before, and will happen again...." ;-)

I haven't come across anyone who actually liked the ending to BSG, although people seem to dislike it for different reasons. Normally, unsatisfactory endings inspire me to write fanfic, but with BSG I just feel a very bad aftertaste. Most unfortunate! I'll be curious to see your reaction, once you get to the end.

But I'm fairly certain you would haaaaaate Caprica, if I know you at all! Too much focus on a male character who makes Paul Wolfe look modest in comparison(!) -- and the plot is all about the tragic consequences of his hubris, etc. etc.

Ah. Paul Wolfe.

You know, as I'm re-watching S1 in my wonderful time of not-having-to-share-the-TV, I realize that, probably as a result of the major upheavals in my own life in the last few years, I'm seeing the show quite differently. But I don't dislike Paul as much. I'm also finding the older technology distracting for some reason. lol!

And the older cars! OMG -- i never noticed before, but at least so far in S1 the limos everyone uses are old. Really old. But not yet cool antiques. Just. Old. Like, one had freaking fins!?! Hello - what is this, terrorism on a budget? LOLOLOL!

(I mean - I know, it is a spy show on a budget, but still!)

They are also reasonably clear that the setting is Toronto/Canada for quite a while... definitely a show that evolved as it went on.

Anyway - I'll finish BSG sometime next fall, probably - and ask about Caprica then. ;-)

No but DAMAGES OMG OMG. *flails* Have seen the first three episodes and am so thoroughly involved. Rose Byrne! Why didn't you tell me Rose Byrne was in it! I nearly died of excitement when her name came up in the opening credits. AND AND, it is fucking tense, and the cinematography is gorgeous, and everyone is dubious (except Ellen who would be too cutesy-naive for my liking except but for the ingenious way they keep cutting to her future bloodied self) AND BASICALLY I love everyone so far.

So, um, thanks for hooking me up with that, anyway.

DAMAGES OMG YAY!! I am so thrilled that you're watching and enjoying it!

I should have mentioned Rose Byrne before...d'oh! She's fabulous in this, and while I know what you mean about Ellen, it's not really spoiling anything to tell you that she doesn't stay naive for very long (that's what I love the most about her, in fact -- that we get to see her transformation).

Everyone is the cast is top-notch, the plot is the most addictive thing EVER, and every little detail means something, like threads in a tapestry. But you have to avoid spoilers at all costs!! Let me know when you've finished S1, so I'll know when I can squee in more detail!

Oh I am avoiding spoilers liek whoa. I wish I had more time to watch it, but it is kind of good to have these long periods of tension in between episodes. I can't wait for the plot to catch up with the flash-forwards. That first scene with the lift doors opening!! Wow wow.

I will definitely be squeeing more about it when I finish S1. And then I have two more series to go, right? It's like Christmas!

Two more to go, yes. S2 is good, but not excellent, so it's a little disappointing after S1. (Still, merely "good" for Damages is heads above many other shows, and S2 has many wonderful moments.) Now, we're almost halfway through S3, and it's back to the "excellent" level so far!

I've just finished mainlining the episodes a few days ago, and I agree with most of what you've said. It's really fascinating for me to watch, even though the characters are difficult to sympathize with (except for Tamara, obviously, who is my favorite, and also sort of the Zoe AI). And it's interesting, because this is one of the first times where I've been really interested in a show almost solely for the plot and the issues it presents and not really for the characters themselves.

But, yeah, even though I don't think it's ever going to be a very fannishly popular show, I'm still glad I decided to watch it even after being burned on BSG.

It's interesting how the most sympathetic characters are the non-human ones, isn't it? I think it's because they're the only ones who didn't have any choice over their situations, and it's compelling to watch them try to gain some semblance of control over their destinies.

The human characters, well, some of them are just appalling people (Daniel Graystone in particular) and others are simply weak (Joseph Adama, Amanda Graystone, Lacy Rand), but watching them get caught in the plot's net is quite interesting.

I *am* seeing a few Buffy fen around, thanks to James Marsters being in it, and then there also seem to be some Eric Stoltz fans, too. There are even posts trying to woobify their respective characters, which *really* takes some mental gymnastics, in my opinion! But so far, not too much fannish activity.
