The response from the fellow whose fruit & veggie pills I've been taking, after I told him to cancel my order so I'd stop paying $40/month for something that doesn't appear to benefit my life:

Things are changing. You're seeing more and more organic and locally grown foods. Even in big-brand stuff, you're seeing more use of natural ingredients in items that've been around for years. Of course, the fact that big brands use their inclusion of natural stuff as a sales tactic is inherent to the problem--it shouldn't be special that they're now using less artificial crap! But hopefully someday it won't seem that way.

Sometimes I think that we're at the end of a less-than-healthy trend that started back in the Industrial Revolution, with mass migrations to urban and suburban areas and people getting used to the idea of incorporating made-things into their lifestyles instead of naturally produced things. Food, clothing, etc. I remember my grandmother mentioning that my mom and her brothers were exclusively formula fed, and not for any particular reason other than that's just what was the thing to do in the 1950s. It sounds crazy to us now when breastfeeding is more widely accepted and scientifically proven to be better, but so was eating bland, nutrition-free white bread.
I just hope this all continues. Obviously we can't regress to a purely agrarian society again, but we can definitely strike a balance between enjoying the conveniences of urban living with the health benefits of organic/local farming. Unless, of course, the freshwater and petroleum supplies dwindle and society as we know it collapses. But that's a whole different discussion.
