ya know, after watching the movie again and thinking about it some more. Dr. Pomater was kind of a douche in the movie:
Jenna had a "situation" that stunk and just didn't feel right (her marriage and all that). The doc entered her life, and enabled her to feel some fresh feelings (love, longing, feeling needed, and all that jazz). And in the end, Jenna was able to get rid of the "stink" (i.e. her husband) and start fresh.
Of course, that method (extramarital affairs) isn't really the natural way to deal with such problems, and can end up causing problems.
