Not apocryphal, and it was Dick Cavett, "You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good . . . Joan Crawford is dead. Good." I've seen the clip, but can't locate it at the moment.

Hello! Could you please elaborate on what you mean by disagreeing with almost everything the man believed in? On Wikipedia I see he was a registered Democrat but pretty much a hawkish conservative?
