As someone who does a lot of art for tshirts (they're sent to another of our offices for the actual screen printing), I may have an explanation- perhaps that was either a test shirt, one of a couple done to make sure the ink or positioning was right...or perhaps a name was misspelled or left off and the shirts had to be reprinted/redone. Then, the old shirt(s) would just be tossed.
Not as romantic, I know, but that's life, I guess! :)
My parents use old cut up t-shirts as rags, so I've seen some of my childhood t-shirts in the rag pile. It's not a bad thing, at least they're getting used and weren't thrown out.
