Part 2
Dean and Sam walked into the local library. “So you believe her?” Dean asked.
“I do.”
“Yeah.” Dean grinned. “I think she’s nice, too. And hot.”
Sam flashed her brother an irritated look. “No, Dean, there’s something in her eyes. And listen to this: she heard scratching on the roof…found the bloody body suspended upside down over the car.”
“Wait, the body suspended? That sounds like the-“
“Yeah, I know, the Hook Man legend.”
“That’s one of the most famous urban legends ever. You don’t think that we’re dealing with the Hook Man.”
“Every urban legend has a source. A place where it all began.”
“Yeah, but what about the phantom scratches and the tire punctures and the invisible killer?”
“Well, maybe the Hook Man isn’t a man at all. What if it’s some kind of spirit?”
Dean and Sam sat at a table in the library. The librarian placed a few big boxes in front of them. “Here you go. Arrest records going back to 1851.”
Dean blew some dust off a box and coughed. “Thanks.”
“Okay.” The librarian smiled and walked away.
“So, this is how you spent four good years of your life, huh?”
Sam grinned. “Welcome to higher education.”
Hours later, they were still looking, but Sam thought she’d finally found something. “Hey, check this out. 1862. A preacher named Jacob Karns was arrested for murder. Looks like he was so angry over the red light district in town that one night he killed 13 prostitutes. Uh, right here: some of the deceased were found in their bed, sheets soaked with blood. Others suspended upside down from the limbs of trees as a warning against sins of the flesh.”
Dean looked at another page. “Get this, the murder weapon? Looks like the preacher lost his hand in an accident. Had it replaced with a silver hook.”
Sam pointed. “Look where all this happened.”
“9 Mile Road.”
“Same place where the frat boy was killed.”
Dean patted Sam on the back. “Nice job, Dr. Venkmen. Let’s check it out.”
Sam gathered up their research and followed Dean.
Rev. Sorensen pulled up in front of Lori’s sorority house to drop her off. They had been arguing again about Lori living there instead of at home. “I know this is your first time really living alone since Mom died-”
“That’s not it.” Her dad insisted. “I worry about you.”
“There are 22 girls in there. It’s perfectly safe.”
“That’s exactly what I’m worried about. You don’t think I know what goes on in there?”
“Dad, do we have to have this argument again? I’m over 18. I can live my own life.”
“Oh, which means, drinking and partying with that roommate of yours!?”
“I’m an adult. I can take care of myself. Good night.” She got out of the car.
“Lori. Lori, come-Lori!”
She ignored her father’s shouting as she slammed the car door and walked into the house.
Lori walked up the stairs and stopped outside one of the other girl’s bedroom. She noticed there was a long scratch on the wall leading up to the doorway. Inside, the girl was working at her computer, so Lori brushed it off and continued on into her bedroom. She was about to turn on the light when she saw Taylor was already in bed and stopped herself.
“Taylor, you awake?” She whispered. When Taylor didn’t answer, Lori left her alone and went into their bathroom to get ready for bed. A few minutes later Lori came out in her pajamas and paused as Taylor shifted in her sleep. She slipped into bed, never noticing the dark figure hiding in the closet.
Dean and Sam drove up to 9 Mile Road and got out of the car. Dean opened the trunk and held out a shotgun for Sam. “Here you go.”
“If it is a spirit, buckshot won’t do much good.” Sam pointed out.
“Yeah, rock salt.” He handed it to her.
“Huh. Salt being a spirit deterrent…”
Dean took out a coil of rope and shut the trunk. “Yeah. It won’t kill ‘em. But it’ll slow ‘em down.” They started walking towards the trees.
Sam was impressed. “That’s pretty good. You and Dad think of this?”
Dean smirked. “I told you. You don’t have to be a college graduate to be a genius.”
They heard noises among the trees and stopped walking. Sam raised her gun and looked around.
“Over there. Over there.” Dean whispered.
Sam aimed the gun and cocked it. A figure came out from behind the trees. It was the local sheriff. “Put the gun down now! Now! Put your hands behind your head.”
“W-w-wait.” Dean stuttered. “Okay, okay!”
“Now get down on your knees. Come on, do it! On your knees!” They got down. “Now get down on your bellies. Come on, do it!”
Dean gestured at Sam with his elbow as they lay on the ground. “She had the gun!”
The next morning, Lori rolled over and slowly opened her eyes. She noticed a pool of blood on the floor. Rubbing her eyes, she looked over at Taylor’s bed. Her friend was dead, and there was blood everywhere. “Oh my God.” Then she screamed as she read the words written in blood on the wall by Taylor’s bed.
Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the light?
Dean and Sam walked out of the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office. Dean was gloating. “Saved your ass! Talked the sheriff down to a fine. Dude, I am Matlock.”
“But how?” Sam asked.
“I told him you were a sorority pledge and that they were hazing you. That I just went with you to make sure it was safe.”
“What about the shotgun?”
“I said that you were hunting ghosts and the spirits were repelled by rock salt. You know, typical Hell Week prank.”
“And he believed you?”
“Well, you kinda look like a sorority pledge.”
Seconds later, several deputies ran out of the building and sped away in police cars. Sam and Dean shared a look that said ‘that can’t be good’.
They drove by Lori’s sorority house and saw her sitting outside in the back of an ambulance with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She noticed Dean’s car and caught Sam’s eye as they drove by. Her dad was talking to the Sheriff. “I just want to take her home.”
“I understand that, Reverend. But Lori’s now connected to two murders, and I can’t ignore that.”
“Listen to me. Arrest her now, or let me take her home.”
The sheriff thought about it for a second before agreeing. “Make sure she’s available for questioning.”
“Thank you.” Rev. Sorenson walked over to his daughter. “Sweetheart, you ready to go home?” She stood up and let him lead her away.
Dean drove around the corner and parked along the street behind the house. They got out and walked around to the back of Lori’s sorority.
“Why would the Hook Man come here? This is a long way from 9 Mile Road.” Sam pointed out.
“Maybe he’s not haunting the scene of his crime. Maybe it’s about something else.” Dean pushed Sam back against the side of the house behind the bushes as two girls came out the side entrance of the building. He peaked around the corner as the girls walked away. “Hey, sorority girls! Think I’ll see a naked pillow fight?”
Dean turned around to see Sam trying to climb onto a second floor balcony. He gave her a boost and then climbed up himself.
They made it up unnoticed and snuck into the tiny unlocked window in Lori’s walk-in closet. Dean fell on top of Sam as he climbed through the window. “Oh, sorry!”
“Hey, be quiet.” She whispered.
“You be quiet!”
“You be quiet!” Sam opened the closet door slightly and saw another deputy leaving the bedroom. She waited until the officer went downstairs and then opened the door. Once in Lori’s bedroom, Sam and Dean could see the writing. “Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the light? That’s right out of the legend.”
“Yeah, that’s classic Hook Man all right.” Dean tapped his nose. “And it’s definitely a spirit.”
“Yeah.” Sam agreed. “I’ve never smelled ozone this strong before.” Dean moved over to the window, but Sam noticed something beneath the writing. “Hey, come here.” He walked back over and she pointed to a cross symbol beneath the writing. “Does that look familiar to you?”
Dean and Sam stood next to the car. They were looking at a picture of the cross symbol that they found during their research. “It’s the same symbol.” Sam declared. “Seems like it is the spirit of Jacob Karns.”
“All right, let’s find the dude’s grave, salt and burn the bones, and put him down.”
Sam read aloud. “After execution, Jacob Karns was laid to rest in Old North Cemetery. In an unmarked grave.” They looked at each other in annoyance.
“Super.” Dean said sarcastically.
“Okay. So we know it’s Jacob Karns. But we still don’t know where he’ll manifest next. Or why.”
“I’ll take a wild guess about why. I think your little friend Lori has something to do with this.”
