Scarecrow continued...

Scotty was serving the couple whose car was in for repair, and he was being friendly.  He sat two plates of apple pie in front of them.  “We’re famous for our apples. So, you gotta try this pie.”

“Oh, no. It-please.”  The girl protested meekly.

“It’s on the house.”  Scotty insisted.

Dean walked in. “Oh, hey, Scotty. Can I get a coffee, black?” Scotty glared at him, but walked away, presumably to get it.  “Oh, and some of that pie, too, while you’re at it.”

Dean sat at a table next to the couple. “How ya doin’?” The couple waved and smiled as they chewed. “Just passing through?”

“Road trip.” The girl answered.

“Hm. Yeah, me too.”

They nodded as Scotty walked over to refill their cider. “I’m sure these people want to eat in peace.”

“Just a little friendly conversation.” Scotty shot Dean another withering glare as he walked away. “Oh, and that coffee, too, man. Thanks.” Dean continued talking to the couple. “So, what brings you to town?”

“We just stopped for gas. And, uh, the guy at the gas station saved our lives.”

“Is that right?”

“Yeah.”  The guy answered. “One of our brake lines was leaking. We had no idea. He’s fixing it for us.”

Dean tried to mask his concern. “Nice people.”

“Yeah.”

“So, how long till you’re up and runnin’?”

“Sundown.”

“Really…to fix a brake line?” The man nodded. “I mean, I know a thing or two about cars. I could probably have you up and running in about an hour. And I wouldn’t charge you anything.”

“You know, thanks a lot, but I think we’d rather have a mechanic do it.”  The girl said.

“Sure. I understand.” He paused, trying to think of what to say to convince them to leave before dark. “You know, it’s just that these roads. They’re not real safe at night.”

The couple shared an uncomfortable look.  “I’m sorry?”

“I know it sounds strange, but, uh-you might be in danger.”  That sounded weird, even for him.

The guy was annoyed.  “Look, we’re trying to eat. Okay?”

“Yeah.”  Dean turned back around to his table and continued under his breath.  “You know, my sister could give you this puppy dog look, and you’d just buy right into it.”

The bell above the café door jingled as someone walked in. Scotty came out from the kitchen. “Thanks for coming, Sheriff.”

Scotty and the sheriff spoke in hushed tones as they looked over at Dean, who was doing his best to act casual. The sheriff nodded and walked over to him. “I’d like a word, please.”

“Come on. I’m having a bad day already.”

“You want to make it worse?”

Dean let out a sigh as he stood up.  “Alright, alright.  I’m goin’.”

The sheriff followed Dean to make sure he left town. Once he passed the town limit sign, the sheriff turned around and drove back into Burkitsville.

Sam and Meg were sitting at a table in the bus station with a couple of sodas and snacks from the vending machine.

“So, what, are you on some kind of vacation or something?” Sam asked.

Meg laughed. “Yeah, right. It’s all sipping Cristal poolside for me.” Sam laughed too. “No. I had to get away from my family.”

“Why?”

“I love my parents. And they wanted what’s best for me. They just didn’t care if I wanted it. I was supposed to be smart…but not smart enough to scare away a husband.” Sam smiled. “It’s just, because my family said so, I was supposed to sit there and do what I was told. So I just went my own way instead.” Sam stared at her, somewhat unnerved by the similarity between them. Meg blushed.  “I’m sorry. The things you say to people you hardly know.”

Sam shook her head. “No, no, it’s okay. I know how you feel. Remember that brother I mentioned before, that I was road-tripping with?”  Meg nodded. “It’s, uh, it’s kind of the same deal.”

“And that’s why you’re not riding with him anymore?” Sam nodded. Meg raised her soda. “Here’s to us. The food might be bad, and the beds might be hard, but at least we’re living our own lives and nobody else’s.” Sam tapped her bottle against Meg’s and they both took a drink.

************************************

  • The couple from Scotty’s cafe was walking through the orchard after their car broke down
  • “I can’t believe it.  We just got the car fixed.  Hmmm, maybe that cute, weird guy from the café was actually right about these roads at night…”
  • They walked towards the clearing and ‘badass scarecrow’ was behind them
  • Noises.  “Who’s there?” They looked around and the scarecrow appeared from behind the trees
  • It began walking towards them OMG! RUN!
  • ‘Hero Dean’ jumped out with a shotgun and his red cape blowing in the breeze (jk) “Get back to your car!”
  • The couple ran back toward the broken down car as Dean pumped the scarecrow full of rock salt “Take that, Bitch!”
  • Like Michael Myers, it just kept going and going and going…oops, that’s the Energizer Bunny ;)
  • Finally, Dean and the couple reached the car and the scarecrow was nowhere to be seen (apparently he couldn’t leave the confines of the orchard…not a very powerful god, IMHO ;) Dean saved them! \o/

*******************************

Meg was leaning against the wall at the bus station, asleep. Sam was sitting with her bag a few feet away, on the phone with Dean. “The scarecrow climbed off its cross?”

“Yeah, I’m tellin’ ya. Burkitsville, Indiana. Fun town.”

“It didn’t kill the couple, did it?”

“No. I can cope without you, you know.”

“So, something must be animating it. A spirit?”

“No, it’s more than a spirit. It’s a god. A Pagan god, anyway.”

“What makes you say that?”

“The annual cycle of its killings. And the fact that the victims are always a man and a woman. Like some kind of fertility right. And you should see the locals. The way they treated this couple. Fattenin’ ‘em up like a Christmas turkey.”

“The last meal. Given to sacrificial victims.”

“Yeah, I’m thinking a ritual sacrifice to appease some Pagan god.”

“So, a god possesses the scarecrow...”

“And the scarecrow takes its sacrifice. And for another year, the crops won’t wilt, and disease won’t spread.”

“Do you know which god you’re dealing with?”

“No, not yet.”

“Well, you figure out what it is, and you can figure out a way to kill it.”

“I know. I’m actually on my way to a local community college. I’ve got an appointment with a professor. You know, since I don’t have my trusty sidekick Geek Girl to do all the research.”

Sam laughed. “You know, if you’re hinting you need my help, just ask.”

“I’m not hinting anything. Actually, uh-I want you to know…I mean, don’t think…”

Sam smiled as Dean struggled to find the words.  “Yeah. I’m sorry, too.”

“Sam. You were right. You gotta do your own thing. You gotta live your own life.”

“Are you serious?”  She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

“You’ve always known what you want. And you go after it. You stand up to Dad. You always have. Hell, I wish I-Anyway…I admire that about you. I’m proud of you, Sammi.”

“I don’t even know what to say.”

“Say you’ll take care of yourself.”

“I will.”

“Call me when you find Dad.”

A feeling of lonesomeness suddenly overwhelmed Sam. “OK. Bye-and Dean...”  The words caught in her throat for some reason.  She swallowed, trying to get past the lump that had formed.

“Yeah, love you too Sammi.”

Tears welled in Sam’s eyes as she pressed the end button.  Med stirred in the corner and Sam’s vision was already blurry by the time she walked over and sat down next to her.  “Who was that?”

“My brother.”

“What’d he say?”

“Goodbye.”

Maybe it was because Meg was virtually a stranger, but Sam didn’t try to hide the tears as they began to fall.  Dean had said he loved her, which meant he was worried they might not see each other again.  Even though he had just told her she was right, she felt like it was all terribly wrong.
