Since my appetites for historical walks and physical pain are apparently insatiable, I spent Sunday on the Forgotten New York walking tour of Bushwick. You really need to read about Bushwick in Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx is Burning. You can borrow my copy if you like. Very elegiac writing, describing the incredibly swift downturn of the neighborhood after the Germans and Italians moved out in the early '60s. There's a haunting image when it talks about how, due to all the arson in the neighborhood, now you can see all the beautiful churches--there's nothing left to block them.
