For many years, improv was my life.

That is absolutely amazing and wonderful news! Yay! Go you! It is hard to go back to things after a setback. I was once told by a voice teacher that I should focus on acting, not singing, because that is where my talent was -- I was 16. I actually listened to the bitch. I found a new voice teacher and started singing again only a few years later. My new voice teacher and I had in common the knowledge that my original voiceteacher was a beyotch.
