Tomorrow's party is over today

For anyone who's read All Tomorrow's Parties by William Gibson, this story will come as no surprise. It's still amazing to me how sci-fi writers can be spot on about an issue ten years before the population at large seems to be aware of it at all.

God... as a Detroit native, this is so depressing to me. I was just talking to Angela about Detroit yesterday and how sad and hopeless it's become.

Yeah, I've got a friend here on LJ who lived in Detroit for a couple of years, but I've never been myself. It's so strange to think about how a once-thriving city had just disintegrate like that.

Coming to the South, too... kissthewookiee August 18 2005, 00:59:11 UTC
I expect similar blight to hit the South in the next 2 years as Textiles and all of its support manufacturing industries totally finish leaving for China. That means in cities like Charlotte there will be just the bankers and then the beggars. The classic haves and have nots. No grey. In what will take a year to complete, the demolishing of Plant 1 Pillowtex (Fieldcrest Cannon) began today in Kannapolis, a former bedroom community of Charlotte. What do they plan to replace it with, more shopping? Expect plenty of those abandoned houses surrounding that site in 3 to 5.

Are you kidding? There are plenty of Wal-marts around to support the disenfranchised...

I agree that places like Kannapolis are doomed.
