This is in response to your comment ( Hmm. That's an interesting statement to make...Not judging. Just observing and thinking.)-- the DamnPortlanders entry seems to have been deleted.
I guess I did imply that it would be a physical ass-beating, didn't I? I'm pretty familiar with downtown Atlanta (I have family in the area), and in my experience African Americans in ATL don't tolerate racist remarks-- though of course there are many different ways of handling them (physical violence, getting the speakers charged with harassment, just plain bitching them out, etc).
I took your original comment to mean that they would get treated that way by virtue of being white, and not because of any statements they made. But if you mean that the people in ATL would beat some ass after having these two guys make those hateful remarks, that's less worrisome than the idea that they would get the beat down simply for being white and not having said a word.
It's our response to the things we can't control that define us as individuals, and we'd all be a lot better off if we stopped returning hate for hate. Of course, we do live in the world, and some things are what they are. In any case, thanks for the clarification.
I'm always torn between engaging the world and trying to have a positive impact on people, or retreating to the metaphorical ivory tower and leaving them all to hang. The misanthropic philanthropist. There's a book title for you.
