A nickel's worth of perspective

There's been a lot of talk about racial bias in the media this week, most of which stemmed from two AP photos which used the verb "loot" in relation to a black person, and "found" in relation to a white couple. I've seen several sides to this issue played out in the press, on public blogs and private journals, as well as in front of the proverbial ( Read more... )

I felt like I had to address it in some way. It's so easy to be the snarky bastard online, and a lot of people are talking a lot of trash in groups that they'd never say in person simply because it's an anonymous medium.

Anyway, thanks for the comment!

German Boy.

I pride myself in never saying something online that I wouldn't say offline. (and I partially have YOU to thank for some of that boldness) People who hide behind the cloak of the web are pussies.

very well put. i agree with everything you've said.

as racially divided as chicago is (and has always been), i've had mostly positive experiences with black people. the only negative exchanges i've had recently have been with homeless people.

were these kids who threw the bottle at you or adults? just curious.

Homeless people are difficult to gauge because so many of them are mentally ill.

I didn't get a great look at the bottle-throwers. I'd guess they were old enough to drive, but too young to drink.

I borrow that line from Crazy Tom, who borrowed it from a movie I forget, but it's true for me. I find the only group I direct my hate towards is rednecks. And I truly believe for balance a human must hate somebody or something, either someone else or the self; and yes, they are mutually exclusive so hating someone else doesn't mean you hate yourself. And by my personal definition, it was rednecks, not blacks or whites or yellows or reds, that were looting in that crawdad puddle. It's a redneck that rides his lawnmower down my street while holding a Coors Light can in one hand. It's a redneck that watches EVERY American Rules Football game on Sunday and Monday night instead of helping my sister-in-law with their three fresh babies. It's a redneck that does water bottle driveby shootings or points fingers about the Katrina aftermath without giving time (not just money) to the effort. In part, I agree with you that religion is a nice way to put panic, ambition, and greed aside in times of panic and crisis and to focus perspective ( ... )
