iPod replacement program

Has anybody taken advantage of the out-of-warranty iPod replacement program for iPods 3rd generation and older? I'm contemplating doing it and I wanted to know if the process is smooth.

I'd like to know if there was one for the 4th generation. Mine bit the dust right after the warranty expired :\
