ACHOO! The flu chronicles

Mar 09, 2011 13:21

It's been a week and I'm still battling the flu. I'm keeping a close eye to make sure that it's not going to hang around and turn into some sort of chest infection1. So I'm home, knitting, swigging juice and reading some comics. Overall, the content's been a huge miss. Ultimate Captain America; the less said about that, the better.

Aww I sorta liked Ultimates Cap... sorta. Then again it may just be that it felt more like the first two miniseries (in terms of tone and grounding) and less like Loeb's horrific crap. I'm holding out judgement to see what 1610 Steve takes away from all this though.

Also, I'm so glad it's not just me having issues with Snap! I largely ignore that. I get the character was introduced as a bit angry, but there is "angry" and there is "pimp" NOT THE SAME!! Or even related.
And yeah the ending of the one shot struck me as about as thought out as an after school special.

Rebekah Isaacs is FANTASTIC. She may is fast becoming one of my fave comic artists with a more "usual" style... if that makes sense ^^

But this whole other 'Ultimate soldier' theme keeps popping up - after the first couple of years of the comics telling us that Steve was the first and the last, it sounds like a cop out. But yeah, I'll sit down and see where it takes me. The art is a bit of all right, but when this writer makes Millar seem like a man of nuance and subtlety, something is WRONG.

The first time I got introduced to Sam Wilson (years ago, no lie) the pimp thing made me uncomfortable, because you know, just no. So I kept hearing things, that no, Sam wasn't a pimp, that he was a social worker and that Marvel retconned it. So the first comic with Sam I read in years does the whole snap thing. WTF? I think it's just me being unlucky ( ... )

That might be aprt of it. I've not read Ultimates since that arc where we learned the Red Skull was Steve's son. After that I either couldn't aford or dind't want to see. Does it actually work? I mean they had that whole annual where SHIELD was trying, but it killed everyone but Steve (and I liked that Annual. Captain America replacement canon fodder boy made a nice story btw- I'm waiintg for them to learn it only works one woman now or something LOL). So if they have a stabler formula, I cans ee why that would feel like a cop out :(

HA! This story made a time up by Mark and Frank Miller seem nuanced and sensitive by comparison. I do agree it was over the top and I think needed the MATURE AUDIENCE note to be right up front ( ... )

The thing is, from Secret Six (Bendis and Ultimate Spiderman) they had Steve Rogers as the man, and the reason why the Secret Six were what they were (one of the reasons) was the fact that they were still trying to replicate the serum because the next war would be genetic. Or something. Then Steve had words with Fury about the fact that governments were still trying to spend money to get the amazingness of the supersoldier. Or something ( ... )

Naw man, Ultimate Cap - the writer well, I don't want to say "Doesn't get him at all" and bawww, but the treatment of Steve and the other person calling himself Captain America is horribly reductive. I can understand the concept of an American being repulsed by what the government does in their name (Britain, I'm looking at you), but this is not reflective, just torture porn. Bleh.

No, haven't looked at HFH as yet. I should, I hear that some old school people (Paladin? Silver Sable?) are guest starring. Haven't seen them in a minute.

I don't know what crack Romita Jnr is on jazzypom March 10 2011, 09:23:03 UTC
I know that people tend to hire him because of his break downs and him being fast, but his art is blocky and yuck. The colourist seems to use some sort of coptic markers knock offs and the art is just a mess. I can't even bother to torrent the Avengers now, because Romita Jnr's art hurts the eyes.

I'll check out Heroes for Hire, then.
