I think I'm always confused by the movie thing because it was IMHO the first Iron Man movie that really launched the CI fandom. I mean yes there was The First Fic, but I think the fandom numbers have always come from the movies, not the comics, and movie canon has always been a huge part of the fandom. Not as huge as now, sure, but it was always a big part.

As for BNF's, I can only really think of two, and one came with her old fans, but it does happen, so I don't know. But we've always had a few BNF's in the fandom, just different ones, so I guess someone doesn't like the new ones XD

The new BNFs are cool though jazzypom January 21 2012, 07:39:49 UTC
I like the fact that they just write, squeal and generally act with a sense of decorum. Nowt wrong with that.

True dat. With each new movie, you get new fans and new blood, and new work! That's always good, right? Right? I mean, as much as I like Steve/Tony I like the fact that there are other pairings as well, and people are writing about them. Yeah, it's movie verse (and I don't really read much of that verse), but hopefully, it make them want to read the comics and see what's up. But if not, that's cool, too.

Oh, please. There was so much sketchy shit going on in that fandom before the Dreaded Noobz arrived. It was a mess. New people can only make it better.

No brah, not at all.

New people can only make it better.

Fresh blood, fresh eyes, always good. A lot of the new writers are really decent, too.

The great thing with new people is that they don't have any stifling respect for the old ways. Like, the thing with the first Big Fic in this fandom, is how they've set the notion of Stark and Rogers - which became the template for fandom to follow, and tended to inadvertently stifle other viewpoints as to how the characters were portrayed, even in other mediums, which is why I cheered at the movie's portrayal of Tony Stark - he's a mess, his heart is in the right place, can be emotional, a bit needy - but he's also an asshole. If you like Tony Stark, you have to embrace the fact that he's an asshole, although he can be a martyr about things - but still, an asshole.

The new fans get it - they get the fact that Tony is all of these things with a generous helping of Stark dickery and they bring that understanding to the fic, and I can only cheer that on. They pretty much don't give a toss about the hierarchy and I love them a LOT for that.
