Personally, I've had good experiences with Toshiba. I have a netbook which has been dragged all over creation in the last year (international travel, road trips, bumping around in my school bag three to four days a week) and functions consistently and well. I like the keyboard, I like using skype (built-in webcam), I like having as much or as little functionality as I need (as compared with a tablet).
The model is NB-505. Not their top of the line, but it handles the Office suite, powerpoint, image applications, web stuff, music and media all solidly. It was relatively inexpensive, right about $275-300.
Good luck! I hate losing a computer. They are my little blinking brain extensions.
I'm going to buy a Toshiba netbook. I had a toshiba laptop about eight years ago, but the hinges were heavy, and it just didn't stay up (the monitor bit), so I ended up having to lean it against text books, etc. But hopefully they've moved on down the road since then.
But yeah, I get my new netbook in a week! Off to throw money at my credit card balance now.

It seems netbooks were never meant to hang around in the first place. They were meant to be a bridge between a mobile phone and computer -in terms of cost and portability. It's just that the ipad kinda opened up the market for tablets, and that's what everyone wants. Except for me. Boo.
They do have differencesjazzypomMay 9 2012, 08:06:10 UTC
I'd consider a tablet to be like a bigger version of a smart phone. If you do a lot of websurfing, and a fair bit of social networking, and just general emails, that's fine They are also good for reading (my friend reads books and knits on her ipad - she never uses her computer). The memory isn't a problem, and you can just do general email stuff. A lot of the tablets are touch screen (I'd say touch screens are standard at this point), and for most people it suits them to the ground
( ... )
I have a Toshiba netbook, as well. I'd definitely recommend it (if you can find one, that is). They were somewhat difficult to find here, as well, but the store ordered one for me to pick up there without any trouble. This was a about a year ago, so it's surprising that they've fallen that far out of tech vogue so quickly.
I do have a couple of friends with Acer netbooks who have been pleased with them, too. Any chance another brand might be more available?
Yeah, I'm going to go with a toshiba. They are hard to find here as well, I have to be ordering online, and waiting around my house for the netbook next week.
I had an acer, actually, and I liked them loads, but those are disappearing from my local stores too. In that, the ones John Lewis had (John Lewis is a BIG Department store) were ex display and they didn't think they'd be getting any more in. So it's either tablets or the bigger laptops and none won't suit.
It will be interesting to see what crops up three years from now, though. When I bought my netbook those years ago, you were literally tripping up over choice. Now, it's all thin on the ground.
