Ram Dass on MySpace

Feb 17, 2008 02:08

OK, I think my brain just exploded. Ram Dass has a MySpace page. Ram Dass. On MySpace. He has 11,490 friends. *boggle*

Can someone please explain to me how MySpace works and how someone gets 11,490 friends. How is that beneficial? I just can't wrap my brain around it.

You don't have 11,490 friends. You have 11,490 people who have a link to your journal. It t'aint the same. :-)

Yes, I get that. I was using "friends" as MySpace defines the term. It was late and I wasn't clear. I'm researching ways for a musician friend to gain more exposure using MySpace. Everyone keeps telling her "MySpace!" and nothing more. I'm wondering exactly how that works.

Say you have 11,490 people with links to your page. Do those people automatically get updates when you post or do they have to come looking for you? Is there a way to target subgroups of them or is it just a shotgun blast with every post? Is there mass emailing functionality or only journaling? Things like that. It seems like one big group of 11,490 would cease to be useful if there's no way to segment it. Kind of like a flat file v. a relational database.

I don't use it, so I don't know. LJ is more than enough for me, although I should perhaps explore it for my publishing business as people seem to use it for their business sites.
