Troubleshooting

I decided to be productive today: I cleaned, I set up my workstation and booted my file server. I taped my wireless gateway to the window so the whole world can share. The tape didn't hold and it fell down. No worries, I taped it back up using twice as much tape. Walking out of the kitchen, I tripped over the phone cable running to the gateway ( Read more... )

I have no idea why your DSL quit working.

But, as for your walls, the occasional time I scrub walls, Mr Clean seems to work well. Follow directions on the label (you don't use it full strength). Use a piece of an old towel to scrub with. Any really stubborn greasy spots, try a bit of VIM or similar cleaner.
Just be prepared. whenever I think I'm going to scrub one wall, the rest look worse and also need to be scrubbed. Ceiling, too

If you had no internet, how did you manage to make an LJ post?

Connect a phone to the jack & wire leading to the DSL modem. If you can hear a dialtone with no noise on the line, it was probably random or the modem falling off the tape.

If there is noise, check if there's still noise with a different jack & wire (unplug the wire to the modem from the jack). If so, it's either random or you shorted something when the jack was off the wall.

If no noise on other jacks, check that jack with a different wire. That will narrow it down between the jack and wire (maybe it broke when you tripped on it).

Something else to try early on is plug the modem into a different jack & wire.

Aye -- life gets harder when you have a dry loop (and no phone) :-)

It is 'fixed' now; apparently, my file server generates enough RF noise to completely disrupt the DSL connection. I turned the computer off; but maybe tin foil would help!
