Maybe You Could Do More

Mar 10, 2014 08:13

Some of you know, the past few years I have been trying to be "a runner." Or jogger. Or, probably most accurately a plodder. Each year, I add a mile to my yearly goal and attempt it on my birthday in September ( Read more... )

I just returned home from a day of teaching. I sat down and told myself I was either going to write or go to the gym. Then I saw you had a new post and thought...right after I read Jo's post I'll do one of those two things. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm going to go write a sentence and see where it takes me. Thank you for the inspiration. ~Krista

I read this this morning on my phone, but didn't get here by computer until this afternoon. First off, you're not at all frumpy. Seriously.

Second, your "maybe you could do more" helped me muster up the courage to send out two agent queries, which my subconscious thought up this morning as I was waking up, and which my waking self was all set to quash. Because "maybe I could do more" to help move my career forward, y'know?

And thirdly, "maybe you could do more" reminded me of a passage from The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe that I ended up posting as part of my book review earlier today. In the book, his (dying) mother says this, and it really stuck with me, so your inadvertent "echo" was a huge motivator:

"... Of course you could do more--you can always do more, and you should do more--but still, the important thing is to do what you can, whenever you can. You just do your best, and that's all you can do. Too many people use the excuse that they don't think they can do enough, so they decide they don't have to do ( ... )

I'm 'planning' to start running again next week and started writing again this week. Winter wasn't kind to me, but, yes, 30 seconds at a time, one page at a time. I'll meet you at the top of the hill. :)

This year, I'm not teaching. I'm parenting young children again. I have ZERO spare time. And yet, I, too, recommitted today to exercise. And the book I'm writing which is not quite so far past deadline, but several weeks so. This morning, I yanked my butt out of my hotel room and though I didn't run, I speedwalked the sidewalks of Philly for an hour. It felt good. Can't wait to get home, to the hills I love to walk. To the book that's past deadline. And to my grandchildren, difficult as that commitment is. Because the important things in our lives are worth committing (or recommitting) to.
