Love of school - shhh... don't tellext_2665811July 19 2016, 00:56:54 UTC
Hi, Jo,
Great writing prompt! I have a character that finds out that he loves school while doing a science project. He starts reading books and finds that there is a whole world of sports fiction that he never knew about.:) He doesn’t lose sleep, but it is a secret that he can’t let his friends find out about his love of school.
Here’s my excerpt:
10:02. I just looked at the clock an hour ago and it read 9:59. At least it felt like an hour ago. My stomach is churning, burning, and hurling is possible. How is it possible to feel euphoric and anxious at the same time? Ever since I left the library, my brain has been foggy, and I’ve had a few dizzy spells. Gram has dizzy spells, but she’s not 9, she’s like hundred years old, I think. If anyone on the soccer team finds out that I like school, I will never be cool again.

My character is a middle aged woman who struggles with the balance of wearing her many hats while all the while battling OCD and an eating disorder
( ... )
I went to a Highlights conference once where Pam Conrad was giving a workshop. She told us that all of her characters had secrets even though most of them never showed up in her books. I remember her giving examples from characters in books she'd written. It seemed like such a good idea to me that I've tried to use it in my own writing. It does deepen character and add another level. I miss Pam as a writer and as a lovely, giving person and your post brought back to me the way a writer can give lasting gifts to another writer. Thank you.
