I don't have a WIP. My students write memoirs in the fall, so I chose myself as the main character. Hoping to use these as starters for my memoir that I write with them. Here's mine: 1. At the center of this world are two beautiful daughters around which everything else revolves. Radiating from these. daughters out toward me is sunshine and at the same time a rope/leash. It varies who is controlling and holding it. 2. Love and kindness are paramount. These are considered entry tickets. Failure to exhibit these will result in non-admittance or release from the world. 3. A calendar is required for the "character". One is posted and checked frequently. Has busyness become an idol?
My Character, Baileyext_4182957July 10 2017, 19:39:29 UTC
So, Teachers Write is just starting today, and I don't want to waste a moment, so I'm going to go with a character I just met today. His name is Bailey, a sixth grader.
Here are a few things in his world: He's an only child who is bullied at school, but he's got a special relationship with his dad. He would rather be in the wood working shop with his dad than using technology. His dad, who has been unemployed for six months, has a heart attack.
I've got a lot to consider though, like what's his quest? Is his situation dangerous or safe? Hmmm...I'll think about that.
Like I said, I just thought of him today, so I'll keep getting to know him.
Everett's Worldext_4182835July 10 2017, 19:52:52 UTC
Readers need to know that Everett doesn't feel safe to be authentic around his father, because he feels his value is in his performance, rather than his relationship as a son. Readers also should understand that while Everett's sister is spiteful and mean, her actions come from a deep-seeded hurt, and there is much more than meets the eye with her. Finally, I hope readers can empathize with the struggle some parents experience when trying to help their children excel without finding their identities and value in their level of accomplishments.

Great start!!
Is there a mom in the picture? Does that dad hold the power, or the sister? Why is their children excelling so important to the parents? Lots to think about!

Jo - this is my first Teacher Write. I have been working on this story for a couple of years, and this is based on adopting our last child from Tonga. We have five children, two adopted children, both from Tonga. My daughter is now 21, but she and our family had to really work on getting her to a "healthy place." She knows that I have been developing a story. Here are three things you should know about my character
( ... )

This is a really important story, I can tell. But you've given me three important points about your character, not your character's world, which is probably quite crucial to her journey. And, you've got two worlds here. The one before she was adopted, and the one after. How do they contradict each other? Play a role in her journey? Good luck with this!!

Thanks for your helpful warm-up. I'm starting to work on a new story and this has really been helpful for starting the process of building the world of my characters and my story. I'm really excited to see where this writing professional development takes me and my story this summer!
