awww poor kitty :( are you two really close? you never know, she might get over it - animals live in the moment and cats can live really long lives can't they? I've never met a dog who would actually attack a cat. Plenty of them chase them... but I didn't think it was instinctual to hunt them since they are carnivores. How have they managed together if Dax attacks Smoky?! Maybe you should invest in a shock collar and give him a good zap next time he charges... he won't think twice about it!
