What's the difference in power between an associate and a chief justice? Anyone? Anyone? Anyway, I thought they just promoted the oldest one . . . Someone gimme a history lesson.

Here's Wikipedia's entry on the Chief Justice.

As I understand things, if there is no Chief Justice when the court is in session (term starts the first Monday of October), the senior Associate Justice takes on the duties until the office can be filled. Right now, that would be Stevens.
