I laughed when my history teacher told us that. Apparently it was actually a common problem (even when the government "drafted" peasants). But think about it this way: if they didn't go home to bring the harvest in, what would their families eat all winter?

the book I was reading didn't have much information on it. it was given as background information. when did the salt wars begin?
