My dearest J - I am so sorry you had to listen to something so hate-filled and simply wrong. I see in my work, every day, the grinding and horrible effects of this sort of narrow-minded hateful thinking about "others." we use this excuse to keep people down-trodden and boxed away. We keep thinking we're going to get smarter than this, and we don't. Love to you and all peaceful wishes on this Independence Day.
I haven't turned on the TV this weekend, as I'm hoping to avoid anything that would make me crazy about being a citizen in this country. I'd like to like being in the USA for the duration of this holiday.
I'm so sad that you were subjected to this speaker's bigotry. And the clothing size bigotry. Yeesh.
Luckily, Houston NPR is broadcasting the local symphony concert in the park. They're ranging from John Philip Sousa, to "The Yellow Rose of Texas", to Bernstein ("Make our garden grow") and an aria from The Tenderland. You know what some American composer needs to do? Give us some alternative to the frickin "1812 Overture" on occasions like this. Note to self: find Philip Glass' contact info.
In fact, the ONLY "good" sex is sex that's ruled by Christian teachings. Something along the lines of Creative Fidelity and Responsible Petting, I expect.
I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. It sucks that small-minded people like that have the ear of an entire congregation. Especially when said congregation views this person as a real moral leader. Guh. Whatever.
