My co-op is nowhere near as crazy as Cloyne--we're mostly grad students and young professionals. :) But we are also big (easy to get lost in for a while), have random murals everywhere (though most try to be pretty-ish), and I like to think we have fun together.
Maybe Berkeley co-ops tend to be a little more on the wild side anyways. I've only been to two and they both seemed a little intense. :D Also, it does not help that they are largely populated by undergrads, you are right.
Well uhhh they're kinda closing down for a while to do a earthquake retrofit thing and they say that they'll preserve a lot of the walls but um...yeah. Oh well, once people move back in it'll take no time for the walls to be covered in scribblies again.
I've only visited Lothlorien and Sherman, and they didn't seem too bad. Just kinda dirty XD I wish I knew more about the co-ops before figuring out where I was going to live, 'cause they seem like a lot of fun, if somewhat strange.
I don't think I'd ever be able to live in a co-op because I'm a neat freak, but I certainly wish I had visited them more. Now I feel if I hang around a lot I'd be the creepy graduate that doesn't really belong. XD They certainly look like a lot of fun.
Co-ops, as I understand with my limited coherence, are places that students can live with really cheap rent in exchange for doing stuff around the house. They sign up for work shifts - kitchen, bathroom, maintenance, garden, etc. - and pay very low rent and utilities in exchange. Unfortunately as a result, the house can range from decently neat to an unholy mess.
Also, this particular co-op that I visited is one of the largest in the US, and it is known for an incident that occurred in 2006 where students got sick from eating cookies laced with marijuana. Also, Berkeley co-ops are full of drugs, sex, and alcohol. XD
Essentially, people who want to accomplish similar goals come together in a jointly owned and democratically-governed project (whether it be cheaper housing, more equitable worker compensation, etc).
