A while back before we bought this house Kara and I were attempting to get involved in Detroit's dollar homes project for the same reason. I had spent some time at various intentional communities and always thought that Detroit would be a perfect place for one.. I have a theory that the desire for community like that is somehow our heart yearning for the perfect life that's coming after this one.

I wonder what sort of stances communities now adays take on certain doctrine and how they avoid the various kinds of drama that took place at Eshouse over the past few years. I mean, imagine all of that drama happening in the context of not just a meeting place but the very place where all those people reside. I imagine with a sturdy biblical base, solid leadership and loving people, problems would be corrected swiftly and wounds would heal more quickly..

yeah, thats very true. to your list I would also add a lot of maturity and a sense of truly valuing others above yourself and not always having to be "right'. Not just a solid doctrine in professed belief, but also a solid practical theology lived out in the people on a day to day basis.

I think as people in the kingdom of God we are naturally going to be drawn to community because it is the closest glimpse of heaven we can see on this earth. Intentional communities have been a part of the church since day one. The Catholic, orthodox, and anabaptist traditions have never really lost touch with that. Its neat though to see whats happening these days. I've seen a lot of really exciting stuff.
