I once considered buying my own tuxedo, but then I realized that I would have almost no occasion to wear it. I think I was motivated to consider the possibility after the third time I was best man at a wedding (to three different grooms). Of course, the likelihood of my own tuxedo matching what would be required of the groomsmen would be essentially nil, a fact I grasped immediately upon learning that the color scheme for the third time I served as best man would involve red paisley.
I have attended a fair number of charity dinners and such where the dress was formally listed as "black tie optional," which seems to be typically understood to mean that the four or five rich weirdoes crazy enough to own their own tuxedo are welcome to wear it, while everyone else in the room simply wears a dark suit. I never felt inclined to be one of those weirdoes, so I never bought a tuxedo.
All things considered, I doubt that I will have many more occasions to wear a tuxedo than I would have to wear a giant penguin suit.
