Hmm. If you have a car and know people in the bay (which you certainly do!) it's not hard. If you don't but are near a train station, it's not too hard, though visiting outside your sector (South Bay vs East Bay vs The City) on weeknights can be tough, depending on where you wanna go. I spose the same is true for cars, depending on traffic and parking.
Not sure what you mean by sterile. There's dancing and martial arts and biking and hiking and nice neighborhoods and young people and people with kids, so I'm not really sure what people would think it's missing. Obviously there's a lot more good [dancing, restaurants, museums, etc] up in the city, but there's still plenty in South Bay.
