In light of Thanksgiving coming, I was wondering about your family, cultural, or religious traditions. I always wonder what other families do to celebrate time together. It is interesting how different traditions can be ( Read more... )

Wow Jennie that sounds very neat. I've only tried to make a gingerbread house a couple of times, of course it was more a grahm cracker house, but oh well. My family traditions aren't really based on religion either. And actually many of our once traditions have fallen apart with age. When my brothers and I were born my Mom tried to get us started on an ornament collection. The plan was that every year we'd each get either a toy soldier, bear, or angel. I'm the only one that stuck with it for a while. Thanksgiving and christmas is pretty American. But, New Years is a different story. Every year my extended family gets together to light fire crackers, eat a ton of great food and play games. There are a few good luck traditions, like placing the Kado-Matsu by the door (its three pieces of bamboo, with some pine, and tied with rope), or stacking mochi (rice cake) with a tangerine on top, then eating the mochi in soup on new years day. These traditions are slowly dying too. My family used to make our own mochi, granted it was with a ( ... )

My family is very traditional. Every holiday my entire dad's side of the family gets together. Each holiday is at a different family member house, but we all bring food in a potluck style manner. Thanksgiving is always at my uncle's house which is fun because he has a really cool cabin-like house that he built himself. It is a lot of fun seeing all my family. My sisters and I always talk about how when we have kids we are still going to keep the family getting together even though we are getting older. I feel tradition is a big thing in my family. I like establishing traditions too, even if they are just funny ones. For example, we have a tradition among my friends that we do a white elephant gift exchange every Christmas.

This year, traditions will change a little. Now that I have a serious boyfriend, I am spending Christmas Eve away from my family for the first year ever. My boyfriend and I are going to spend Christmas Eve at his parent's house and Christmas day at my parent's house. It is interesting how life changes. Have a good

Hello Jennie,

The term is close to culminating!!! Thanksgiving break was much needed! Gosh that turkey with mashedpotatoes and gravy.....Mmmmmmmmm savored in my mouth. But after the meal i was yawning so much and was wondering why. Until afterwards my friend told me that turkey has a chemical which makes you sleep, i'm like 'that explaines it".

Well i don't have much to say now, just have lots to do.
Take care and good luck!

In my family, every holiday and birthday gets alot of celebration and attention. We do alot of the "traditional" things like make cookies, and on our birthdays we get a "birthday box"-its the same idea as a christmas stocking but its for your birthday, and it is in a box. Anyway, there is one thing that we do at every holiday, that might seem odd. I dont know if it is because my parents live in California, where its always nice outside, or what. But we have egg hunts at every holiday...not just easter, but at thanksgiving, and christmas too! My dad hides plastic eggs in the backyard with money in them (1 or 2 bucks, and a few have a five in them). Then me, my mom, brothers, and sister in law run through the yard wildly searching for eggs (it gets pretty rough out there). Its really fun! So, thats our little tradition.
