You know, I said that to my dad once, about just wiping out the middle east. My dad then pointed out that even if you did that, people would keep going there anyway, because they believe it's holy, and will remain holy whether it's a town or a green-glowing glass parking lot.

The only way to really end it would be to wipe out anyone with any faith, which is rather more unpalatable...

But I know what you mean. It's extremely frustrating to watch people delude themselves that way.

the atheist question: isn't this why there is the very distinction between positive and negative atheism? something like 80% or more of atheists are of the latter variety, and are such because they simply find the evidence that god exists unconvincing. which, i think, is probably the way it should be because what would be the point of faith if everything can be proven? i mean, you just can't construct a logically valid argument that god doesn't exist (not the same way i can do so for the assertion that there is just simply not a warm, chocolately brownie on my desk right now). but, the non-existence of that argument does not equal the existence of god, and it's a disingenuous premise upon which to base one's argument. why doesn't he go with something stickier, like st. anselm's ontological argument? i actually know somebody who converted to catholicism after mulling that one over ( ... )
