I'm curious about what company produces the scanners you used for this. The reason is that, in 2000, I actually interviewed with a company that was looking to do this very thing. It's interesting to see this technology finally see the light of day.

That said, I'm pretty happy with self-checkout services. Our King Soopers supermarket has 6 self-checkout scanners so there is rarely a wait, and I get to bag it myself too.

I just wish more Wal-Marts had self-checkout, because they tend to have obscenely long checkout lines, and I generally have to wrangle the whole time with Cade, or let him run loose (usually he just goes to look at the watches).

I couldn't find any details about the hardware used, but here's a link to a picture of it

Oh! I was impressed by those at Giant too!
(I wasn't sure if that was your nearest supermarket, but I went in there almost every day when walking back to my brother's house.)

I was most impressed that I wanted to get salad bar there one evening -- so I did, and it weighed everything and printed appropriate labels, and I could just self-scan that by myself there and all. It worked really, really well. Self-scans in Seattle were kind of hit and miss for me, I think.

Produce is pretty easy actually. You go an weigh it and then print out the price tag thingie, stick it on, and then scan it just like everything else :)
