this unholy alliance.
Alice hands her the phone mere moments before it rings.
“This is important,” she says, with that distant look in her eyes that tells Rosalie she’s been seeing things again. It’s not entirely surprising, since they all know some sort of important conversation went on between Carlisle and Edward, and it was important enough to end the honeymoon both newlyweds had wanted so desperately.
Curiosity killed the cat, and it might kill this vampire too, as Carlisle refuses to say anything until he can see whatever is wrong with his own eyes, and Alice phases in and out from her visions. Rosalie feels on edge, like something horrible is on the horizon and she cannot save herself.
The phone rings, and she answers. She is surprised to hear Bella’s voice on the other end.
Rosalie? It’s Bella. Please. You have to help me.
She might not like Edward’s new bride like Alice does, but she has learned to tolerate her despite her bad life choices. And right now, the strain in the girl’s voice, and her own interest in what is so important that no one can talk about it, propels her forwards.
“What’s wrong, Bella?” she asks.
She is not prepared for the answer.
Out comes the sordid tale: a missed period, suspected pregnancy, feeling the baby move within her womb, Edward’s desire to ‘take care of things’.”
“Rosalie,” Bella begs, “I can’t do that. I can’t lose this baby. I need you to help me keep him safe.”
Her shock over this pregnancy - she has a medical degree and years of experience as a vampire but none of this makes sense - is second only to her lack of surprise at Edward’s reaction. Her brother is nothing if appalling obtuse where Bella is concerned, and this new development is perfectly in character with what he’s done in the past. Black and white, possible or impossible, this baby does not fit into the plan and as such he cannot handle it. It must be taken care of.
The thought makes her furious.
She knows Edward thinks her vain and spoiled and solely focused on what she doesn’t have - mortality, children, a beating heart. She knows he thinks these things of her, and she can only imagine the reaction he will have once he learns who Bella has called, because if anything, Edward doesn’t understand the limits of love and Bella is too in love to hold her own against him.
Until now, that is. Calling her is as much a declaration of independence as Bella can muster, and that alone should be enough for Rosalie to pledge her allegiance.
But that is not all: there is a child at stake, one which Bella says ‘nudges’ and one which Bella wants to keep safe. Rosalie understands, innately, despite her own inability to carry life. She understands that this is not Edward’s choice alone, that it is possible to love something sight unseen. It is all she wanted for herself - this opportunity for children, and she cannot begrudge Bella this desire as well.
She may not agree with the choices the girl wants for herself (immortality not withstanding, she can attest to the difficulty of life with Edward Cullen, Drama Queen) but this is one choice she herself would clearly make and for that, she will do what she can, even if it means tearing her brother limb from limb to protect Bella and her child.
“Everything will be all right,” she tells Bella. “I promise to help you. Everything will be all right."
