When making a major decision, how do you determine God's will?

I think God very much likes me. so if I want something, and it works out, I figure God thought it was a good idea and that's why it happened. if I want something, and it doesn't happen, then it probably isn't my best idea ever and it's a good thing it didn't happen.

I'm not sure this translates from my brain to here in a way that makes sense, but at least I tried.
