i think the whole bit about wars being fought at the same time at the same place is in some ways a more accurate figurative rendering of war, always already present in some psychic form!

You know Jules, I think wars within wars is probably some sort of manifestation of your internal struggles...perhaps you're bothered by a bigger issue that requires you to deal with many other sub-issues. The digital cammies, I think you're realizing lately that using the old approaches and beliefs that you are used to using to deal with problems is not really working lately. Perhaps you're trying to revert back to your old self in many ways but maybe something is stopping you...someone or some internal instinct. The Marine that set off the IED, see him as you wanting to try something new, but fear that it will "blow up in your face."

then again, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...just old memories of your service that is manifesting itself more lately because it's veteran's day...
