Vermiculite

I had this plant on my desk sitting in a saucer that I had put some vermiculite so that the plant would not sit in the overflow water and it would provide a bit of extra humidity as well. I took the plant home last week and haven't moved the saucer yet. So three people this morning all are like, what is this? It's vermiculite, then I had to explain
