If you want biological filtering, then I would just go for sponge filters. These people make good ones. We've got a couple on the spare tank (20 gal, it's only permanent resident is a betta). They are good to have on hand if you need an emergency bio filter to cycle up a tank quickly.
we have heavily planted tanks so an undergravel would not work for us... you wouldn't happen to need some cryptocoryne or giant anubias would you? :)
