Summary: The best kinds of winter dates are the ones that leave you so warm inside that you can't feel the chill.
It's been a long day - longer than it had any right to be, being only 10 PM - and Sou is so tired that the idea of falling face first onto his pillow and simply not moving until the next morning is incredibly appealing. It isn't that anything he had done that day was particularly taxing - far from it, really - but everything he did lately seemed to require so much more effort. He runs though a mental checklist of "must-dos," comes up with nothing urgent, and decides to just check his phone for messages before calling it a night.
Just as he's tapping out a reply to the last unread message he has, a new one pops up from Marius, and Sou smiles, curling up on his side and settling in because, no matter how tired he is, going to sleep could never win out against talking to Marius.
Sou-chan ♡ Let's go on a date tomorrow (^3^)
What kind of date?
It's a secret (≧∇≦)
Okay ♪
Really?! It's okay?!
Of course it's okay ^^ But hey, shouldn't I be planning the dates?
I think my idea will be more interesting~
Mari!
What? What???
... Never mind. I'll go tomorrow ♡
YAY!!! (^3^) (^3^) (^3^) I'll call you in the morning, okay?
Okay?
Sou-chan?
Sorry. I fell asleep (o´Д`) Call me in the morning, then!
You're weak to sleepiness (≧∇≦)
Sou smiles at that, sending a quick good night message before closing his eyes, grateful for the distraction. Whatever it was that had been weighing on his mind earlier in the day seems to have completely disappeared.
---
He isn't sure what he expects when he wakes up the next day, but it definitely isn't waking up to Marius happily chirping at him on the other end of a phone call at 6:00 AM.
"Mari?"
"Hi Sou-chan! It's morning!"
"I... yes. It's definitely morning..."
"I'm almost to your house, so wake up!"
"You're coming to my house?"
"I should be there in about ten minutes. Make sure you're ready, okay? Bye!"
The line goes dead and Sou blinks at his phone, still clasped in his hand. Simple things seem to evade Marius at times, such as the fact that it is generally not considered socially acceptable to call people at 6:00 AM and invite yourself over. If it were anybody else, he'd probably be annoyed, but with Marius, he just finds this kind of thing endearingly typical. He remembers Marius laughing at him the night before. You're weak to sleepiness (≧∇≦) He knows his real weakness is just Marius, but that would be his secret, for now at least.
True to his word, Marius shows up just about ten minutes later, and Sou slips out the door to meet him after scrawling a quick note to his mother to explain his absence. Marius grins at him, nearly hopping from one foot to the other with excitement, and grabs Sou's hand to tug him along. Sou's cheeks flush from the simple contact and Marius giggles when he notices, pulling him a little closer.
"I still think it's cute, you know? That you're shy~"
"It's not that I'm shy-- It's just-- You do these things so easily..."
"If I had to wait for you to hold my hand, it would probably be all shriveled up by the time you did."
"It wouldn't take that long!" Sou protests, but he's laughing, and Marius is laughing, and it's one of his favorite sounds in the world. "Hey... where are we going, anyway?"
"Yuzawa."
"Niigata? Why?"
"You said you wanted to go snowboarding... so..."
"... You planned a snowboarding trip? But that's expensive!"
"Sou-chan is worth it. Besides I've been saving up for a long time, so don't worry, okay? I really wanted to do it!"
"You're making me look bad!" Sou whines, and Marius pokes at his pouting face.
"Maybe I have selfish reasons, too~"
"Like what?"
"Maybe I just want to make everyone at the ski resort jealous when I show up with my hot boyfriend~"
"Mari!" Sou protests again, and once more they dissolve into laughter, which neither of them is really able to get under control until they're seated on the train and well on their way. Nobody is paying any attention to them at all, too sleepy or absorbed in their work to spare a second glance for two kids who just happen to be sharing their train car. Marius has brochures for the ski area they're headed to and offers to bring up the website on his phone, but Sou is more interested in sitting as close to Marius as he possibly can without drawing unwanted eyes and looking out the window to watch the scenery change.
"I don't think it'll be too crowded yet," Marius says, and Sou hums by way of reply. "It just opened, so there shouldn't be too many people there."
"Good. Then I won't have a lot of witnesses when I embarrass myself."
"I bet you'll be really cool!"
"Why? I like it, but you know I'm not good at it."
"I don't know. Something about it just seems to suit you all the same."
"I think it's more suited to you. Weren't you born wearing mittens or something? I saw pictures of you when you were like three days old and you were already stuffed into a little snowsuit."
"How?"
"Your mom showed me! You were kind of lumpy, but definitely cute."
Marius looks scandalized and Sou commits his expression to memory for the next time he really needs to laugh.
---
As Marius had predicted, the ski area is relatively empty, populated by only a few families and what seem like some pretty hardcore skiers and snowboarders out to get a few runs in before the place fills up later in the season. Unfortunately, Sou's prediction is also correct; Marius is able to stay on his feet while Sou spends a lot more time on his butt, laughing a little harder each time at the sheer ridiculousness of it and letting Marius pull him back up. By the sixth time it happens, they're both nearly hysterical, and Sou is fully prepared to dramatically swear off snowboarding forever.
It continues this way until the sun is setting and the resort is nearly closed, and they make a last, desperate attempt to catch one of the last lifts up before they stop running. Sou thinks that maybe, this time, this one last time, he can make a clean run - but all hope of that fades as he doesn't make it more than twenty feet before careening off to the side and landing in an undignified jumble of limbs. He brushes himself off and looks up to see Marius grinning at him, waving his cell phone back and forth triumphantly.
"I'm definitely sending this picture to everyone!"
"You wouldn't!"
"I would! I'm doing it right now!"
Sou snaps his boots free and lunges to catch Marius, just managing to get the phone out of his hands before he's able to press "send." Marius snatches his phone back and runs away, laughing. Sou yelps and pursues him until Marius trips over something - or nothing, maybe; Marius is still trying to grow into his long limbs and he often reminds Sou of a baby deer these days - and falls into the snow. He has just enough time to roll onto his back before Sou catches him and sits right on top of him, Marius still giggling as they both try to catch their breath.
"Okaaay," Marius whines, clearly accepting defeat. "I won't send anything."
Marius slides the phone back into his pocket, but Sou doesn't move. He reaches down to brush the snow from Marius' hair and smiles softly when Marius shakes his head to help, causing his hair to fly everywhere, and Sou tries in vain to smooth it back into place. The dampness of the melting snow is causing it to curl at the ends and Sou can't help but pull off his gloves and run his fingers through it to speed up the process.
It's a shock of cold to his fingertips, but the warmth in his heart far outshines the chill. Marius smiles, turning his cheek into Sou's palm, and Sou slides his thumb along Marius' cheekbone. His skin is smooth, a bit flushed from either the weather or from Sou's close proximity, and Sou is nearly overcome with the desire to pull Marius close to him and protect him from all of it - the wind, the cold, and anything else that could ever wipe the beautiful smile off his face.
"Will you kiss me?" Marius whispers. "Nobody's looking, and I really want you to."
Sou glances around and sees that it's true - they're alone here, especially at this time of day, when everyone is headed in and nobody else is going to come up the lift to disturb them. He keeps his hand in place on Marius' cheek and gently leans in, kissing him softly as Marius wraps his arms around his neck. Sou thinks he can feel Marius' heart racing even through all the layers they're wearing, and though he's beginning to feel light-headed, he's reluctant to break the kiss even to breathe, for fear that he'll never be able to find his way back to this moment. The need for oxygen ultimately wins out, though, and he pulls back just enough to find Marius' eyes, pressing another kiss to his forehead as Marius tucks an errant piece of hair behind his ear.
"We should go."
Marius nods. Really, Sou wants nothing more than to kiss him again, to do nothing but kiss him forever, or at least for the foreseeable future, but sense prevails and he gets to his feet, helps Marius to his and somehow manages to maneuver back down in one piece.
"You can stay over tonight, if you want. I'm sure my parents won't mind. It's going to be a little late for you to go home, after all."
Marius happily agrees and Sou wonders if he's already figured out that the invitation is rooted less in concern for the hour and more in complete unwillingness to let him go.
---
The train ride home feels long and quiet, a bit sleepy, and Sou is somehow almost startled to hear Marius' purposely quiet voice in the otherwise nearly silent and deserted car.
"Sou-chan?"
"Hmm?"
"I thought you said you'd only kiss someone if you were definitely going to marry them."
"Well, in that case, I guess I'll have to marry you now."
Marius grins at him, clearly pleased with that response.
"We might have to go to Germany to do that."
"You did promise you would take me there someday, you know."
"It'll be even better if we're going there to get married! Ne... does that mean I have to write two kanji every time I write my name now..."
"My name is easy!" Marius makes a face and Sou stifles a laugh before continuing. "But, you know, that might confuse everyone else."
"I'll just keep it for myself, then. I have a lot of names already but Sou-chan's will be my favorite."
"You're my favorite."
Sou's heart beats in his throat for a moment. He isn't sure he had really meant to say that, but if he did - and he thinks he did, really - he doesn't want Marius to laugh at him or think it's weird. Instead, though, Marius looks a bit surprised, then happy, scooting closer and leaning his head on Sou's shoulder, their sides flush together.
"You're mine, too. It would be scary, you know? If there was no Sou-chan, I mean."
"You never have to worry about that."
"You'll always be with me, right?"
Marius' voice sounds oddly strained and Sou wraps an arm around him reassuringly, presses a kiss to his temple and lets Marius fall against him even further.
"I will. Mari and Sou against the world."
