Hashimoto had always wanted to be a pirate. He lived in Tortuga, he always saw ships full of pirates and the desire to follow them grew stronger, but no one ever wanted him on board.
Hashimoto knew the reason was that all the pirates believed he brought bad luck on board. He had been on three ships during his life: three shipwrecks and he survived every time.
All the pirates knew his story and they refused to have him as part of their crew. Right when he was sulking by the window, he noticed a familiar ship entering the dock.

Hashimoto had spied the Shooting Star for a long time. The crew looked friendly and not as scary as some other pirates were. The captain was even shorter than him.
He was tired of being a scullion in Tortuga, so he decided this was the right time to change his life forever.
He waited till everyone left the ship for the city taverns and approached the Shooting Star. He threw a rope and after a couple of failed attempts he managed to fasten the hook on something and started to climb. That was the beginning of his new adventurous life.

Totsuka was strolling on the deck of the ship harboured in Tortuga, when he saw a shadow climbing in the dark.
“Who are you?” Totsuka asked startling the person who had just reached the deck.
“I want to be a pirate!” the shadow answered enthusiastically.
“Why?”
“Wait... you are not going to kill me now, are you?”
“I’m supposed to kick you off the ship, but you seem amusing somehow. What’s your name?”
“Hashimoto Ryosuke.”
“Welcome on the Shooting Star, stowaway!”
“Am I allowed to stay?”
“Just until the others find you here and kill you, of course.” Totsuka smiled.

Hashimoto had forgotten about Totsuka, the guy who never left the ship, the men who could not set foot on land.
He was quite the legend too, although most of the time people laughed about his weirdness.
Hashimoto was sure Totsuka had a reason why he never left the water and he was eager to know more about it.
Once he asked Totsuka.
“I’m earthsick.”
Hashimoto didn’t know what to do with his answer. He started believing there was an actual type of sickness he never heard about. After all, the world was so big and full of unknown things.

Hashimoto was in his usual hiding place in the hold of the ship when Totsuka arrived and placed a plate of food in front of him.
“Here’s your dinner.”
Hashimoto grabbed the bread and soup and started eating voraciously.
“I’m glad they didn’t find you yet. I’m not sure if some of them would be happy to have a bad luck charm as you here. With all the ships that you sank... supposedly.”
Hashimoto stopped eating for a second and his eyes asked Totsuka again why he didn’t tell the others yet. Totsuka just smiled.
“I think it’s all bullshit.”
